![]() ![]() American watch factories went dark for decades, though their legacy lives on through the family heirloom watches crafted a century ago that continue to tick faithfully today. The fall of legendary watchmakers like Elgin, Illinois, Hamilton, and Waltham signaled the end of an era. Only one company managed to survive the collapse of the American pocket watch market - the Waterbury Clock Company, which you now know as Timex. In time, a number of American innovations found their way into Swiss watchmaking factories, widening the global footprint of American watchmaking techniques.Īmerican watchmakers fell on tough times during World Wars I and II, and most American brands failed to shift when the market demanded wristwatches instead of pocket watches. While many in the global timepiece industry turned their nose up at the Yankees shaking up the watch market, the Swiss wisely took notice. Harnessing this technology, Aaron Dennison launched the Waltham Watch Company in 1854 and built the first 100% American-made watch. Thanks to American engineers who pioneered advanced machinery capable of cutting metal parts, American factories were able to manufacture premium watches on a mass-production scale. ![]() The first large-scale watch factories emerged in Waltham, Massachusetts - a natural birthplace as the area was the hotbed of the industrial revolution. A Brief History of American Watchmakingĭisappointed with the poor quality of European watches that made their way across the Atlantic, demand for well-built pocket watches launched the American watchmaking revolution in the 1850s. The United States manufactured millions of these heirloom-quality pocket watches during the golden age of American watchmaking, and the movements were built so well they’re still ticking today. In fact, there was a time when American watches gave the Swiss a run for their money.ĭon’t believe us? ![]() Precise transport of particles with the ability to predict the dynamic trajectory of them at single-particle and single-cell levels is important because it allows for designing crucial applications in biology and medicine. Some other magnetic manipulation methods are based on external magnetic fields, which cannot provide precise control over the particles. Current-carrying wires may also increase the chip temperature. Magnetic particle manipulation is a promising method however, in the proposed approaches based on embedded micro-coils, the wiring system is complicated. In methods based on arrays of wells, precise particle control is not offered. Moreover, due to the nature of the methods based on acoustic forces, they mostly work at the bulk level and not at the single-cell resolution. The hydraulic traps may cause undesired shear stress on trapped cells. There are multiple methods for assembling particle arrays on chips, including hydraulic traps, acoustic traps, arrays of wells, and magnetic-based techniques. However, towards this goal, an important step is to obtain a reliable technique to transport the particles of interest (e.g., cells or barcode-carrying beads) to the desired locations on the chip where various tests can be conducted. Thus, screening and diagnosis of diseases such as cancer can potentially be implemented using single-cell analysis methods based on LOC systems. Along with this concept, the lab-on-a-chip (LOC) technique has been introduced and has resulted in a revolution in medical diagnosis and treatment. In this method, even by taking much fewer samples from the body (e.g., liquid or solid biopsies) and conducting studies on a limited number of particles and cells, compared to that of the traditional methods, important rare cells can be detected and studied. The single-cell study is considered a modern approach to dealing with this problem. The introduced chip offers fundamental potential applications in the fields of single-cell biology and bioengineering. We also show a pilot mRNA-capturing experiment with barcode-carrying magnetic beads. We demonstrate the appropriate transport of both magnetic beads and magnetized living cells. The proposed magnetic transport pattern is carefully studied using both simulations and experiments for various parameters, including the magnetic field characteristics, particle size, and gap size in the design. We show that the particle transport in this system is analogous to electron transport and Ohm’s law in electrical circuits. Many particles move synced with the external rotating magnetic field, which results in highly parallel controlled particle transport. The magnetic particles repel each other to prevent undesired cluster formation. ![]() This innovative system, compared to the other rivals, offers numerous advantages. ![]() Here, we present a microfluidic platform equipped with C-shaped magnetic thin films to precisely transport magnetic particles in a tri-axial rotating magnetic field. Progress in this field requires systems capable of accurately moving the cells and particles in a controlled manner. Single-cell analysis is an emerging discipline that has shown a transformative impact in cell biology in the last decade. ![]() ![]() ![]() What we don’t: Expensive and some might not like the baggy fit.Įver since Jake Burton Carpenter started building boards in his barn in the late 1970s, snowboarding and Burton have been practically synonymous. I hope I have provided a fair overview of the FP capabilities of each platform. While AMD has advantages such as excellent GCN architecture and HSA software stack (when ready) enabling many more applications to take advantage of GPU, Iris Pro will have the eDRAM to potentially provide much improved bandwidth and the backing of strong CPU cores. However, even on Windows Haswell GT3e will get strong competiton from Kaveri. Thus, on Linux, Kaveri will simply win out on fp32 heterogeneous applications. Intel's GPUs do not currently support OpenCL under Linux, but a driver is being worked on. Haswell GT3e will again be a strong contender on Windows given the extremely capable Haswell CPU cores and Iris Pro graphics. Overall I doubt we will see Kaveri being used for fp64 workloads.įor heterogeneous fp32 applications, Kaveri should outperform Haswell GT2 and Ivy Bridge. If you are using Windows 8, you might also want to explore using Iris Pro through C++ AMP in conjunction with the CPU. You will generally be better off first optimizing your code for AVX and FMA instructions and running on Haswell's CPU cores. Kaveri's fp64 peak including both the CPU and GPU is only about 110 gflops. In applications depending upon fp64 performance, conditions are not generally favorable to Kaveri. However, Kaveri and HSA will enable many more applications to be GPU accelerated. Compared to discrete GPUs, applications that are already ported and work well on discrete GPUs will continue to be best run on discrete GPUs. Some of you might be wondering whether Kaveri is good for HPC applications. From an API standapoint, Kaveri's GCN GPUs should work fine on for fp64 under all APIs. Trinity/Richland do not appear to support fp64 under DirectCompute (and MS C++ AMP implementation) from what I can tell. fp64 support under OpenCL is not standards-compliant and depends upon using a proprietary extension (cl_amd_fp64). Situation on AMD's Trinity/Richland is even more complicated. However Intel only enables fp64 under DirectCompute but does not enable fp64 under OpenCL for any of its GPUs. The fp64 rate of Intel's GPUs does not appear to be published but David Kanter provides an estimate of 1/4 speed compared to fp32. The fp64 support situation is a bit of a mess because some GPUs only support fp64 under some APIs. Here, for Haswell, we chose to include both GT2 and GT3e variants. As a comparison point, one core in Haswell has the same floating point performance per cycle as two modules (or four cores) in Steamroller. It is no secret that AMD's Bulldozer family cores (Steamroller in Kaveri and Piledriver in Trinity) are no match for recent Intel cores in FP performance due to the shared FP unit in each module. We consider three cases: SSE, AVX (without FMA) and AVX with FMA (either FMA3 or FMA4). The peak CPU performance will depend on the SIMD ISA that your code was written and compiled for. In any case, we believe our readers are smart enough to calculate peaks at any frequency they want, given that we already supply per-cycle peaks :) For CPUs, we are using the base frequency and for GPUs we are using the boost frequency because in multithreaded and/or heterogeneous scenarios the CPU is less likely to turbo. Due to turbo boost, it was difficult to decide what frequency to use for peak calculations. already take into account the number of cores or modules. ![]() We provide a per-cycle estimate for the chips as well as peak calculated in gflops. I am taking this opportunity to summarize the info about Kaveri, Trinity, Llano and Intel's competing platforms Haswell and Ivy Bridge on both the CPU and GPU side. At launch time, we were not clear on the fp64 performance of Kaveri's GPU but now we have official confirmation from AMD that it is 1/16th the rate of fp32 (similar to most GCN based GPUs except the flagships) and we have verified this on our 7850K by running FlopsCL. Floating point peak performance of the CPU and GPU on both fp32 and fp64 datatypes is one of the considerations. With the launch of Kaveri, some people have been wondering if the platform is suitable for HPC applications. ![]() ![]() ![]() Remove the face of the unit and press its reset button for five seconds.
![]() ![]() This can be done without bait (for example ground beetles and spiders) or with bait (for example dung beetles). Collectors and researchers of various ground-dwelling arthropod species may use pitfall traps to collect the animals they are interested in.On short distances, dry pitfall traps are then placed along the fences to collect the animals, which subsequently are manually transferred to the other side of the road, thus preventing massive roadkill. To prevent them from being killed, volunteers may place low fences along roads which the animals have to cross. During the mating seasons of toads, frogs and salamanders in temperate climates, these animals often have to cross busy roads on their way from wintering grounds to breeding ponds.Pitfall traps can be used for various purposes: Examples of baits include meat, dung, fruit and pheromones. Lures or baits of varying specificity can be used to increase the capture rate of a certain target species or group by placing them in, above or near the trap. One or more fence-lines of some sort may be added to channel targets into the trap. This is done to reduce the amount of rain and debris entering the trap, and to prevent animals in dry traps from drowning (when it rains) or overheating (during the day) as well as to keep out predators. The opening is usually covered by a sloped stone or lid or some other object. A little detergent is usually added to break the surface tension of the liquid to promote quick drowning. The fluids that can be used in these traps include formalin (10% formaldehyde), methylated spirits, alcohol, ethylene glycol, trisodium phosphate, picric acid or even (with daily checked traps) plain water. Wet pitfall traps are basically the same, but contain a solution designed to kill and preserve the trapped animals. ![]() Dry pitfall traps consist of a container (tin, jar or drum) buried in the ground with its rim at surface level used to trap mobile animals that fall into it. They come in 2 main forms: dry and wet pitfall traps. Pitfall traps come in a variety of sizes and designs. Active collection may be difficult or time-consuming, especially in habitats where it is hard to see the animals such as thick grass. This is a form of passive collection, as opposed to active collection where the collector catches each animal (by hand or with a device such as a butterfly net). Animals that enter a pitfall trap are unable to escape. Pitfall traps are a sampling technique, mainly used for ecology studies and ecologic pest control.
